USAFord is recalling 565,691 Bronco SUVs in the United States, spanning the 2021 through 2026 model years and including the high-performance Bronco Raptor, over a wiring defect that can lead to an engine-bay fire.
The problem is insufficient protection for the wiring harness in the engine compartment. Over time the harness can chafe against nearby components. The insulation wears through, and the exposed wiring can short-circuit. In the worst case, that short ignites a fire, either at startup or while driving.
Ford says it is aware of 15 fires linked to the defect, seven on Bronco Raptor and eight on standard Bronco models. The Raptor’s stiffer suspension and different underbody routing make its harness more prone to the chafing. No crashes or injuries have been reported.
Drivers may notice smoke from the vents or a dashboard warning before a fire develops. Dealers will install additional protective sheathing and abrasion-resistant tape over the harness at no cost. Ford plans to mail owner notifications between August 24 and 28.
The smaller Bronco Sport, which rides on a different unibody platform shared with the Escape, is not part of this recall.
Ford's body-on-frame off-roader, sold in two-door and four-door bodies with doors and roof panels that come off. A 300 hp 2.3-litre turbo four is standard and a 330 hp 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 sits above it; four-wheel drive is standard on every trim. US prices start at $40,795 for either body before destination.
