Car News from United Kingdom

Britain exports most of what it builds, runs the engineering cluster most of Formula 1 works out of, and owns almost none of its famous marques.

23 articles · 11 brands

This page collects news about the car industry in the United Kingdom: model launches, the plants that build them, and changes of ownership. The industry has two halves that barely touch. One is volume assembly, most of it for export: Nissan at Sunderland, the country’s largest car plant, Mini at Oxford, Toyota at Burnaston, Jaguar and Land Rover at Solihull and Halewood. The other is small-batch and high-value, running from Rolls-Royce at Goodwood and Bentley at Crewe down to firms that deliver a few dozen cars a year. Sitting across both is the motorsport engineering cluster in the corridor north-west of London, where seven of the ten Formula 1 teams are based and where much of the world’s racing and prototype work gets contracted out.

Ownership runs almost entirely outside Britain. Jaguar and Land Rover belong to India’s Tata Motors, Mini and Rolls-Royce to BMW, MG to China’s SAIC, Lotus to Geely, McLaren to CYVN Holdings of Abu Dhabi, and Vauxhall to Stellantis. Aston Martin is the largest maker still headquartered and listed in Britain, though its shareholder register is international. The full tree, and how the British case compares with the rest of the continent, is in Europe’s car brands.

Frequently asked questions
Which car brands are British-owned?
Very few of the well-known ones. Aston Martin is the largest British-headquartered maker, publicly listed, with Lawrence Stroll's consortium leading the board and Geely, Saudi Arabia's PIF and Mercedes-Benz among its shareholders. Genuinely British-owned firms are small and founder-run: Gordon Murray Automotive, Ariel, Noble, Radical. Morgan is majority-owned by Italy's InvestIndustrial and Caterham by a Japanese owner.
Who owns Jaguar Land Rover?
India's Tata Motors, which bought both brands from Ford in 2008 and runs them as a single company. Design and most assembly stayed in the UK, at Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton, with a plant in Slovakia added in 2018.
Are Minis still built in Britain?
Some are. Mini has belonged to BMW since the Rover Group broke up in the 1990s, and the Oxford plant still builds petrol models. The electric Cooper and Aceman are built in China by Spotlight Automotive, a joint venture between BMW and Great Wall Motor.
Which is the largest car factory in the UK?
Nissan's plant at Sunderland, which has been the country's highest-volume car factory since the 1990s. It builds the Qashqai, Juke and Leaf. The site also has its own battery supply next door, from Nissan's partner AESC.
