Subaru Corporation traces back to 1953, when Fuji Heavy Industries formed from the merger of five Japanese manufacturers; the company adopted the Subaru name for its corporate brand in 2017. It is headquartered in Ebisu, Tokyo. Toyota has held a stake in Subaru since 2005 and increased it to roughly 20% in 2020, making the two automakers strategic allies without a full ownership relationship - Subaru still develops and builds its own vehicles independently.
Subaru’s lineup runs from the Impreza and Crosstrek through the Forester, Outback and three-row Ascent, nearly all sold with the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and horizontally opposed Boxer engines standard. The BRZ sports coupe was co-developed with Toyota, which sells the same car as the GR86. Subaru’s main production base is in Gunma, Japan, alongside a plant in Lafayette, Indiana that builds for the US market.
