Tesla tore down its Fremont, California Model S/X assembly line in just 46 days, closing out 14 years of production that began with the Model S in 2012. Tesla, Inc. was founded in 2003 and delivered its first car, the Roadster, in 2008. The Model S followed in 2012, the Model X in 2015, the Model 3 in 2017, and the Model Y in 2020. The Model Y went on to become one of the best-selling vehicles in the world by the mid-2020s. The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas.
Tesla designs its own electric powertrains, battery systems, and driver-assistance software. In China it builds the Model 3 and Model Y at Gigafactory Shanghai for domestic sale and export, and the Shanghai-built cars run on a mix of LFP and ternary battery chemistries depending on trim. The Supercharger network gives Tesla owners access to high-power DC charging across most major markets.
